Serving Mexican Street Food in New York City

In 2009, David Chiong and Elizabeth Gaudreau opened a tiny, funky, downtown casual taqueria on the Upper East Side with a surprisingly sophisticated take on comida Mexicana. Cascabel Taquería is what happens when a restaurateur and an interior designer get together to bring Mexican street food to New York City to serve delicious tacos and more. The top quality and local ingredients, innovative cocktails, and energized atmosphere made them out grow their tiny restaurant. One year later, they moved two doors away to a larger corner space and in 2011, they opened another location on the Upper West Side near Columbia University in Morningside Heights.

Cascabel is named after the deep red chili peppers that jingle and rattle when shaken but, Luchadors and Luchadoras of Mexico’s beloved Lucha Libre, inspire Cascabel’s fun and quirky atmosphere. Sourced locally, The Brooklyn Design Company was commissioned to draw the wrestlers striking poses. Artists from Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Mexico were also commissioned to paint the masked luchadors on canvas, hanging in all of the restaurants.

MENU Priced for the budget-conscious but created for the foodie, the menu is broken into five categories: “Para Empezar” (starters), “Para Acompañar” (sides), “Tacos,” “Platos Grandes” (entrees) and “Dulces” (desserts). They serve modern interpretations of traditional Mexican dishes. The signature Cascabel tacos are made from nixtamal corn (dried corn, treated and softened in lime water), not unlike the Aztecs used centuries ago.

DRINKS Try top-shelf drinks from the bar, or select from a wide selection of craft beers, micro brews and wine, as well as the finest tequilas and artisanal mescals. Make sure you check out the seasonal cocktail menu regularly too. They also offer refreshing, handmade aguas frescas, made from citrus fruits pressed in an authentic Mexican juice squeezer and mixed with seltzer and organic agave nectar. In the mood for Sangria, they make it fresh daily!

MERCHANDISING Feel free to order our luchador action figures or a gift card or two! Cascabel also sells one of a kind long sleeved t-shirts, blankets and Mexican luchador wrestler masks.
